KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.13 g, 3 h), Amphipolis, struck under Demetrios I Poliorketes, circa 294-290. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; no controls. Price -. Cf. Helios 1 (2008), 92 (same obverse die, but differing reverse) and NAC 59 (2011), 565 (same obverse die, but differing reverse). Apparently unpublished, a highly unusual piece without reverse symbols. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die with minor die breaks, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

This coin has no reverse symbols, but the obverse die match to the two cited pieces show that it was minted in Amphipolis in the late 290s BC.
